Reflective Essay

VOLUNTEER WORK THAT HAS CHANGED ME.
Description
One day, my Chemistry posted a post on Edmodo requesting volunteers for an event  ‘ Catching Rainbow Flames’. I was attracted by the theme of the event so I volunteer myself with a few of my classmates. It is an event for high school students where they get to know more about Taylor’s College and how college life would be. ‘Catching Rainbow Flames’ is basically a Chemistry experiment used to identify the metal by burning the metal on fire. At this event, I was assigned to demonstrate the experiment to the high school students and also to ensure their safety in the laboratory.
At the time I am writing this, it is a few months after the event occurred. I have to say it was really an eye-opening experience and it had changed me to certain extend.

Interpret
I honestly did this volunteer work as I needed the credits and I’m just simply attracted to the theme of the experiment. However, I realized that I have learned many skills. I find that I can really connect with the high school students. This activity has enabled me to learn how to tolerate and be patient. I find that the whole experience was able to for me to discover that I am able to demonstrate and deliver my thoughts towards others. Besides, I have learned that I’m able to manage and handle different situations. Moreover, I have also learned how to communicate with people, different people.

Evaluation
The volunteer work has really taught me to really see things differently. What I thought I would have got through this event is have fun while doing the experiment. However, through this experiment, I realized that I am able to lead, I am more daring and firm while doing things, which is a good thing as I’m usually very shy and timid. I wouldn’t even dare to stand on stage for presentation. I’m like the new me.

Plan
After one experience, it has opened and encouraged me to join other activities which can open up my mind, especially activities that require leadership skills and meeting new people. I have signed up a leadership camp to build up more of my confidence so that in the future I can be a leader and lead a team.
